Powerjection III Fuel Injection Performance With Carburetor Looks – User Experience

My Shelby Cobra Replica was originally built with a Carburetor as I did not want the engine to look like a modern unit with fuel injection. Once I started driving it I soon realized that I was unhappy with the carburetors performance and so began the search for a fuel injection system that would match the 60’s look of the Cobra.

After looking for just over a year I came upon the Powerjection III EFI system made by Professional Products. This unit is one of the nicest pieces of automotive fuel system technology I have ever seen.

The features of this system are numerous and highly innovative. The thing that struck me first was the fact that the system is designed to fit and look EXACTLY like a Holley 650 CFM carburetor – Perfect for the Cobra.

Upon digging into the info on the system further I discovered a whole host of features on the Powerjection III Including,- A return-less fuel system good for up to 400 HP (IE No return line required), – The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is attached directly to the Throttle body, – When using the inline hi pressure fuel pump the ECU controls the pump thus controlling fuel pressure without the need of a regulator or return line, – The system comes with an initial fuel map and as soon as the engine warms up on initial start the ECU “Learns” about the engine and adjusts the fuel map to match the engines characteristics and the drivers style.

After reading as much as I could find about the system I ordered one based on three primary criteria being its classic looks, The attached ECU which dramatically cut down on wiring and the fact that I did not have to plum in a return line for the fuel system. The ECU’s ability to alter the fuel map based on what it “learns” about the engine was also a big factor.

With all that said how did it work? Installation was as simple as advertised and setting the system up prior to initial start is a 10 second effort to calibrate the throttle position sensor.

The first start with the new fuel injection was virtually instant and had no drama associated with it. I held it on a fast idle for about 20 seconds after which the system settled right down. The supplied fuel map had some small issues, but as soon as the engine reached operating temperature the ECU began adjusting the map to match the engines characteristics. Within about 30 minutes of driving there was an obvious improvement and it continues to improve as I drive it.

For those that like to fiddle. the system comes with software that you can load into a lap top which will allow you to tweak the fuel map and set other aspects of it as well. The nice thing about the Powerjection III is that while you can do this it is not required which works great for the non computer nerd guys and gals out there.

Bottom line – I will not build another car without a Powerjection III EFI System- It’s just that good!
